On Monday, 13 May, 2024, we had the incredible opportunity to meet for the first time with our international partners, including representatives of universities such as Kenyatta University (Kenya), as well as representatives from various UNESCO Chairs: the UNESCO Chair in Research on Intangible Cultural Heritage and Cultural Diversity (Mexico), the UNESCO Chair on Critical Heritage Studies and Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage (Belgium), and the UNESCO Chair on Applied Studies of Intangible Cultural Heritage (Estonia) and representatives of other institutions, such as ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee and Barbados Museum & Historical Society.

Areas of cooperation

During the meeting, we identified several fields of potential collaborative partnerships.

Governance and Management of ICH

Participants shared insights on effective governance structures for ICH, particularly during emergencies. They stressed the need to preserve cultural identity during crises.

ICH in Emergency Situations

Discussions focused on safeguarding ICH in emergencies, emphasizing the importance of maintaining cultural heritage during conflicts and other challenging situations.

Heritage, Migration, and Governance

The impact of migration on heritage governance was a significant topic. Participants discussed the recognition of refugees’ heritage and the concept of “transportable heritage,” using Ukrainian refugees as a case study.

African Contexts and ICH

The importance of recognizing diverse global contexts, particularly in Africa, was highlighted. The role of women, children, and youth in heritage protection and the challenges they face were also discussed.

ICH and Tourism

Concerns were raised about the impact of tourism on ICH, especially the imposition of ceremonies and traditions on Indigenous peoples. The need for sustainable tourism practices was emphasized.

Plans and Future Activities

The meeting concluded with several plans:

  • Showcasing partnerships on ICHgovernance.com under “Our Network”
  • Proposing joint efforts for International Intangible Cultural Heritage Day (October 17) focusing on ICH and AI
  • Preparing a follow-up report and scheduling another meeting in September 2024

Conclusion

The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for collaboration and sharing of ideas. Thank you to all participants for their contributions. We look forward to continuing this important work.
