On Monday, May 3, 2024, a delegate from our UNESCO Chair, Bartosz Pieliński, attended an important meeting concerning the UK’s accession to the UNESCO 2003 Convention. The meeting, held at the Department for Culture, Media & Sport UK and organised by Harriet Deacon, aimed to address the challenges emerging at the crossroads of intellectual property law, Artificial Intelligence, and the inventorying of intangible heritage. The discussion highlighted five major themes, including the willingness of communities to share their knowledge of ICH elements, the desire of communities to engage in the inventorying process, the role of ICH-related databases, AI tools’ representation of ICH elements, and the complexities arising from the interaction of public policies and regulations related to ICH, AI, and IP.
Bartosz Pieliński presented insights on our collaboration with cultural institutions to implement AI tools and proposed a potential framework for cooperation with the AI industry to establish and enhance databases of ICH elements.
