Our Chairholder, Hanna Schreiber, took part in the Living Heritage Journeys transnational meeting in Kraków, hosted by Muzeum Krakowa.
Her participation had a particularly strong link to the Kraków pilot, focused on the Nativity scene (szopka) tradition. Prof. Schreiber has been actively involved in the process of inscribing the Nativity scene (szopka) tradition in Kraków on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (2018), which makes this pilot not only a project case study, but also an important point of reference for broader questions of heritage governance and community ownership.
Across the partners’ exchange, recurring themes emerged:
– participation and community ownership
– meaningful involvement of local residents
– visibility and interpretation with proper context
– heterogeneity within heritage communities – and what that means in practice.
Beyond the working sessions, the group engaged with the local context of the practice, including a visit to this year’s szopka post-competition exhibition and a hands-on workshop element.
Living Heritage Journeys explores ways of integrating intangible cultural heritage into sustainable tourism experiences that leave positive footprints for practitioners, visitors, and communities – across five pilots in Croatia, Italy, Belgium, Sweden and Poland.
