We are delighted to invite you to a guest seminar in the series “Guest Seminars at the Faculty of Political Science and International Studies”, featuring Professor Alexandra Xanthaki, UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights.

📅 Date: Wednesday, 3 December 2025
🕐 Time: 13:00
📍 Venue: Prof. Baszkiewicz Hall, Faculty of Political Science and International Studies, University of Warsaw

In her lecture, titled “Has Culture Already Lost to Populism? Defending Cultural Rights in Times of Global Insecurity”, Professor Xanthaki will explore how rising populism and multiple overlapping crises are reshaping the landscape of cultural rights. She will examine the ways in which culture is instrumentalised in populist narratives, the risks this poses for minorities and Indigenous peoples, and what tools international law and human rights mechanisms still offer for the protection and promotion of cultural rights today.

About the speaker
Professor Alexandra Xanthaki is a leading authority on the international protection of cultural rights, with a particular focus on the rights of minorities and Indigenous peoples. She is a Professor at Brunel University London, where she currently serves as Director of Research, and since 2021 she has been the UN Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights. Her work bridges academic research, standard-setting and practice, making her a key global voice in debates on culture, rights and justice.

The seminar will be held in English.
